Inquiry Learning
Through an inquiry learning approach we ensure that learning is engaging, relevant, challenging and significant.
Transdisciplinary Learning
Transdisciplinary learning conveys that learning has relevance between, across and beyond subjects and connects what we are learning to the real world. The transdisciplinary programme of inquiry offers students a broad, balance, conceptual and connected learning experience.
Transdisciplinary Themes
There are six transdisciplinary themes that form the structure of the programme of inquiry
Who we are |
An inquiry into the nature of the self; beliefs and values; personal, physical, mental, social and spiritual health; human relationships, including families, friends, communities and cultures; rights and responsibilities; what it means to be human |
Where we are in place and time |
An inquiry into orientation in place and time; personal histories; homes and journeys; the discoveries, explorations and migrations of humankind; the relationships between, and the interconnectedness of, individuals and civilizations, from local and global perspectives |
How we express ourselves |
An inquiry into the ways in which we discover and express ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs and values; the ways in which we reflect on, extend and enjoy our creativity; our appreciation of the aesthetic |
How the world works |
An inquiry into the natural world and its laws; the interaction between the natural world (physical and biological) and human societies; how humans use their understanding of scientific principles; the impact of scientific and technological advances on society and on the environment |
How we organise ourselves |
An inquiry into the interconnectedness of human-made systems and communities; the structure and function of organizations; societal decision-making; economic activities and their impact on humankind and the environment |
Sharing the planet |
An inquiry into rights and responsibilities in the struggle to share finite resources with other people and with other living things; communities and the relationships within and between them; access to equal opportunities; peace and conflict resolution |
Programme of Inquiry
Across the year, Foundation students will complete four Units of Inquiry and students in Years 1 to 6 will complete six units.
Each Unit of Inquiry will runs for approximately 6 – 7 weeks. At the beginning of each unit, teachers send home a Unit of Inquiry Newsletter via Compass so parents are well informed of what students will be learning. At the end of each unit, parents receive an Individual Learning Plan Progress report that informs parents how students are progressing against the Victorian Curriculum and includes learning goals for future learning.
Learner Profiles
Exhibition
The exhibition is the culminating, collaborative experience for our Year 6s, in their final year of the PYP. It is an authentic process for students to explore, document and share their understanding of an issue or opportunity of personal significance. All exhibitions are student-initiated, designed and collaborative. The exhibition at Glenroy West is a big celebration, where all students, parents and the wider community are invited to attend.
Student Led Conferences
Students will showcase their learning and discuss their goals for future learning at our Student-Led Conferences.
During the conferences, students will lead the discussion and the teacher will be assisting to facilitate the conference and discuss student progress and goals.
Your role as a parent, is to listen to your child, ask questions about the learning and give feedback to your child.
