LOTE - Indonesian

At Glenroy West Primary School, we offer an enriching Indonesian language and culture program for students from Foundation to Grade 6. Through weekly one-hour classes, students learn to read, write, and express themselves in Indonesian while gaining a deeper understanding of the country's rich cultural heritage. Our Indonesian program is grounded in the Victorian Curriculum.

By learning Indonesian, students develop essential communication skills and become more aware of the role language and culture play in effective communication. This understanding and reflection on language use and learning can be applied across various learning contexts.

In today's interconnected world, learning languages expands students' horizons, opening doors to personal, social, cultural, and employment opportunities. Being bilingual or plurilingual is increasingly becoming the norm, as countries and communities rely on people who can communicate across languages and cultures.

Our Indonesian language program:

  1. Enhances our community's social, economic, and international development capabilities.
  2. Expands students' literacy and communication skills, while deepening their understanding of language, culture, and communication processes.
  3. Fosters intercultural capabilities, including an appreciation for diversity and difference, and openness to new experiences and perspectives.
  4. Encourages students to explore their own heritage, values, beliefs, culture, and identity by understanding how culture shapes us.
  5. Strengthens intellectual, analytical, and reflective capabilities, promoting creative and critical thinking.

The Languages curriculum at Glenroy West Primary School aims to develop students' knowledge, understanding, and skills to:

  1. Communicate effectively in the language they are learning.
  2. Understand the connection between language, culture, and learning.
  3. Develop intercultural capabilities.
  4. Recognise themselves as effective communicators.
