Reading
In Reading and Viewing, Foundation students are participating in joint reading of familiar books. They are learning to identify main ideas and explore a variety of genres including narratives and informational texts. Students are developing comprehension strategies such as visualising, predicting, connecting, summarising, and questioning to support their understanding of texts that are read, viewed, or listened to.
Writing
In Writing, students are learning to connect their speaking, reading, and writing skills. They are using a story mountain to plan and write their own narratives. Later in the term, they will focus on writing instructional texts and simple reports linked to their inquiry topic, 'Living and Non-Living'. Students will be supported to structure their ideas and express themselves clearly.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, students are building their understanding of addition and subtraction through hands-on materials, real-life problem solving, and engaging games. They are also exploring 2D shapes and developing skills to measure and compare lengths. Activities are practical and purposeful to help strengthen number sense and spatial awareness.
Integrated Studies
In Integrated Studies, students are exploring the topic, Living and Non-Living. They are learning to distinguish between natural and man-made things, and investigating different habitats and how to care for animals. Learning is integrated across subjects, with opportunities to read, write, and work mathematically around this topic. Students will also participate in a special incursion and excursion to a working farm.
Speaking & Listening
Foundation students are developing their communication skills through daily interactions, 'Turn and Talk' routines, and 'Circle Time'. They practise respectful listening, asking questions, and sharing their ideas. Each student also has the opportunity to lead their reading group and present work they are proud of, building their confidence and voice in the classroom.
Reading
In Reading and Viewing, students will enhance their reading comprehension skills. They will practise visualising to create mental images, predicting story events, and answering literal questions to understand basic facts. Students will also explore inferential questions to draw conclusions, summarising key points, and making text-to-world connections to relate stories to real-life experiences. They will learn about different text types, such as narratives and informational texts, and focus on sentence structure, punctuation, and word usage to improve their understanding.
Writing
In Writing, students will focus on planning, writing, and editing narratives, persuasive texts, and information reports, using strategies like the power of three and onomatopoeia. They will explore language variation, construct compound sentences, and apply punctuation rules while developing phonemic awareness, and improving spelling and reading. Following the Ann A Writing Model, students will use comprehension strategies to create and edit simple texts for clarity and correctness.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, students will develop various skills in data collection. They will add and subtract numbers within 20 using physical and virtual materials, applying strategies like counting on, counting back and partitioning. They will also describe and sequence events using units of time, such as years, months and days, and compare the number of days in each month. Additionally, students will acquire and record categorical data using tools like tally marks, lists and digital symbols. They will explore different methods to collect data, such as identifying types of rubbish or counting eye colours, and use this data to answer questions. Students will also create and review data representations, such as tallies and star charts, to track events and personal feelings.
Integrated Studies
In Integrated Studies/Inquiry, students will explore the question, "Why is it important to care for our environment?" They will investigate various habitats to understand the differences between natural and man-made environments, and living and non-living things. Students will examine how seasonal changes affect the growth of living organisms and how Earth’s resources are used by different species. The focus will be on understanding the impact of environmental changes on survival and the importance of conserving resources for the well-being of all living things.
Speaking & Listening
In Speaking and Listening, students will explore how different communication systems are used for various needs and purposes. They will learn how language combines with other forms of communication, such as body language and facial expressions, and understand different ways of asking for information, making offers, and giving commands. Students will also develop vocabulary for everyday and school contexts, including the appropriate use of formal and informal terms of address. Additionally, they will focus on phonics, identifying phonemes in consonant blends and manipulating them to create new words.
Reading
In Reading and Viewing, students will be discussing and analysing texts from different cultures. They will be building on various comprehension skills, such as visualisation, summarising and questioning to deepen their thinking.
Writing
In Writing, students will be focusing on planning, writing and editing a narrative, persuasive text and information report. Students will be using Powerful Writing strategies, such as, power of three, onomatopoeia, similes, personification, rhetorical questions and hyperbole.
Mathematics
In Numeracy and Algebra, students will be learning about addition, subtraction and number patterns. Students will use different strategies to help them solve and understand the connection between addition and subtraction. Students will also understand and apply the core concepts and practical applications and strategies for number patterns. In Measurement and Geometry, students will be telling the time, understanding duration and time and understanding calendar and time cycles. In Statistics and Probability, students will be understanding questions types, collecting, checking and classifying data, and creating and interpreting data displays.
Integrated Studies
This term students will be inquiring into ‘Why do we need to look after our environment?’. Students will explore different environments/ habitats to develop an understating of; natural vs. man-made, living vs. non-living and the impacts on survival. Students will also look into how seasons affect growth and change of living things, the use of earth’s resources and how it is used in different ways by living things.
Speaking & Listening
In Speaking and Listening, students will be participating in group work and presentations focusing on fluency, expression and phrasing for an audience.
Reading
In Year 3, students are exploring a range of fiction and non-fiction texts to develop their comprehension. They are learning to identify the main idea, make connections to their own experiences, and summarise key points. Students practise locating literal information and begin making simple inferences by using clues in the text and their background knowledge. They are encouraged to talk about texts and respond using evidence to support their thinking.
Writing
Students in Year 3 are learning to create a variety of text types such as narratives, persuasive, and informative pieces. They practise planning, drafting, and revising their writing, with a focus on using strong vocabulary, clear sentence structure, and punctuation including full stops, commas, and speech marks to create voice. Students are supported to write for different audiences and develop ideas in a logical sequence.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, Year 3 students are working with numbers up to 10,000. They are developing strategies for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division through mental computation and written methods. Students are learning to tell time, measure using metric units, and identify 3D shapes. They also gather data, represent it in tables or graphs, and interpret simple patterns and outcomes. Reasoning and problem-solving are key areas of focus.
Integrated Studies
In Term 1, students are exploring the theme of Belonging by reflecting on their identity and the importance of inclusion and respect in their classroom. They learn about different celebrations and traditions from around the world. In Term 2, the focus moves to Sustainability, where students explore how people and the environment are connected. They examine pollution, waste, deforestation, habitats and life cycles and how First Nations Australians care for Country, taking action through creative presentations and classroom projects.
Speaking & Listening
Year 3 students are developing their speaking and listening skills through discussions, partner work, and presentations. They learn how to share their ideas clearly, listen respectfully, and ask questions to clarify understanding. Students practise speaking in full sentences and using appropriate volume and tone for different settings.
Reading
Year 4 students are building deeper reading comprehension skills by engaging with a variety of texts. They are learning to identify text structures, understand author purpose, and analyse both literal and inferred meaning. Students are developing more advanced comprehension strategies, such as comparing texts and using evidence to justify their thinking. They continue to build fluency and accuracy in their reading.
Writing
In Year 4, students are writing a wider range of text types including persuasive, narrative, and informative writing. They focus on structuring paragraphs clearly and using topic sentences to support their main ideas. Students revise and edit their work to enhance vocabulary, sentence variety, and correct grammar and punctuation, including apostrophes and commas. They consider their audience and intent while planning and publishing their work.
Mathematics
Year 4 students are working with numbers up to the millions and applying their understanding to solve multi-step problems. They are developing fluency in all four operations and using estimation and mental strategies to check their work. In measurement and geometry, students explore angles, 3D objects, perimeter, and area. They collect, organise, and interpret data, describe trends, make predictions and formulate questions. Problem-solving, reasoning, fluency and mathematical communication are integral across all content areas.
Integrated Studies

Mathematics
In Mathematics, students are exploring number patterns, place value, and the four operations with whole numbers and decimals. They are developing strategies for problem-solving and reasoning, particularly in addition and subtraction. Measurement topics include understanding and calculating perimeter, area, and volume, while in Geometry, students are identifying and classifying angles and shapes.
Integrated Studies
The Integrated Studies unit, Sustainability: What impact can we have on the environment?, encourages students to investigate environmental issues and human impact. They are examining renewable and non-renewable resources, waste management, and conservation efforts. This unit integrates Science, Geography, and Civics and Citizenship, promoting inquiry and responsible action.
Speaking & Listening
Year 5 students are enhancing their oral communication skills through discussions, presentations, and collaborative activities. They are practising active listening, articulating ideas clearly, and using appropriate language for different contexts. Emphasis is placed on respectful dialogue and constructive feedback.
Reading
Year 6 students are engaging with complex texts across various genres, focusing on analysing how authors use language features, images, and vocabulary to represent ideas and events. They are comparing and evaluating texts, interpreting literal and implied meanings, and selecting evidence to support their responses.
Writing
In Writing, students are composing persuasive and informative texts with attention to structure, coherence, and audience engagement. They are experimenting with complex sentences, precise vocabulary, and varied punctuation to enhance their writing. The editing process involves peer feedback and self-assessment to refine their work.
Mathematics
Year 6 students are consolidating their understanding of number operations, including working with fractions, decimals, and percentages. They are solving problems involving ratios, rates, and proportional reasoning. In Measurement and Geometry, students are exploring properties of 2D and 3D shapes, symmetry, and transformations, as well as interpreting and constructing timetables and maps.
Integrated Studies
The unit, Sustainability: What impact can we have on the environment?, challenges students to critically examine environmental sustainability and human influence. They are investigating ecosystems, biodiversity, and sustainable practices, integrating knowledge from Science, Geography, and Civics and Citizenship to propose informed actions.
Speaking & Listening
Year 6 students are developing advanced speaking and listening skills through debates, presentations, and group discussions. They are learning to present arguments with clarity and persuasion, listen critically, and respond thoughtfully. Emphasis is placed on adapting language and delivery for different audiences and purposes.
In an exciting development for the students the ‘T’ will change to an ‘A’ in STEAM this term as the students switch to the Visual Arts. All levels will develop Art skills through the following 5 Visual Art Areas.
All levels will link their learning to the current integrated units.
Foundation
Our Foundation students explore the theme Alive in the Garden through painting, drawing, and collage. They’ll build their creative confidence by developing skills in observing, experimenting, and sharing their ideas as young artists.
Year 1
Students use the theme Looking After the Environment as inspiration for their visual artworks. Using painting, drawing, and printmaking, they explore how art can express their understanding and care for the world around them.
Year 2
Year 2 students continue exploring Looking After the Environment through visual arts. They build on their skills in composition, texture, and layering through painting, drawing, and printing techniques.
Year 3/4
Inspired by Science and the Environment, students experiment with painting, drawing, and modelling. They explore colour through science-based activities and deepen their understanding of First Nations perspectives in art.
Year 5/6
With Our Impact on the Environment as a key theme, students use painting, drawing, and construction to express their ideas. They refine their ability to give and receive feedback and showcase their work with pride and confidence.
Foundation
Foundation students explore music through movement, percussion, and group activities. They sing songs, play instruments like xylophones and glockenspiels, and create fun soundscapes—like weather sounds!
Year 1
Students create musical stories using fun sounds and invented characters. They practise clapping, singing, and using instruments, and begin experimenting with tools like GarageBand to explore how music can express feelings.
Year 2
Building on Year 1, students continue using music to tell stories. They learn about musical structures like choruses and ostinatos, and share their ideas through singing, instruments, and digital tools.
Year 3/4
Students explore music for movies and learn how sound effects influence mood and story. They create foley effects, use dynamics and rhythm to compose, and build musical stories that bring images to life.
Year 5/6
Year 5/6 students become composers, using tools like drones, ostinatos, and improvisation to create music for shadow puppet stories. They plan, rehearse, perform, and use digital tools to document their creative process.
Foundation
Students begin their Spanish journey through stories and repetition. They learn basic vocabulary and phrases, imitating sounds and using modelled language to form simple sentences.
Year 1
Year 1 students continue developing vocabulary with fun, literature-based lessons. They begin recognising Spanish letters, forming simple sentences, and practising their speaking and writing skills.
Year 2
Students expand on Year 1 skills by practising sentence structure and increasing vocabulary. They engage in speaking, listening, reading, and writing activities that boost their confidence and communication.
Year 3/4
Using stories and familiar characters, students explore how to express emotions and experiences in Spanish. They build vocabulary and practise speaking, reading, and writing in more detail.
Year 5/6
Senior students develop pronunciation, sentence structure, and grammar through deeper exploration of Spanish literature. They collaborate on oral and written tasks, expressing opinions, preferences, and ideas in Spanish.
Foundation
This term is all about movement and fun! Students practise throwing, catching, kicking, and bouncing balls. Later, they’ll explore athletics events like running, jumping, and relay races.
Year 1
Year 1 students refine movement skills while learning about teamwork. They’ll play games that develop control and coordination and begin learning the basics of athletics.
Year 2
Year 2s put their growing skills to use in group activities and games. They practise dribbling, kicking, and start preparing for the athletics carnival with fun track and field events.
Year 3/4
Students explore invasion games like soccer, netball, and football. They learn teamwork, strategy, and ball skills while also training for athletics through sprinting, jumping, and throwing activities.
Year 5/6
Interschool Winter Sports are the focus for Term 2! Students build skills in football, netball, and soccer, then compete each Friday. It’s all about teamwork, effort, and representing Glenroy West with pride!
